Pressure Surge Analysis
Surge Analysis is the numerical computation of fluid hammer pressures and flows in pipeline systems. Surge analysis is used to design ways to safely control fluid inertia: keeping the fluid within acceptable pressure ranges while avoiding cavitation, overflow, and equipment damage.
We provide an extensive range of pressure surge analysis services to our clients.
Pressure surges can destroy your pipeline systems. Typically this occurs through pipe burst, pipe collapse or pipe movement. Some impacts are less explosive in the form of lining damage or fluid contamination. Dramatic failures can include air valve failure, pump damage, check valve slam, generator damage, massive flooding, loss of supply , sinkholes and major structural damage.
Pressure surge problems impact clean water and waste water systems. The problems are also significant in power station cooling systems and oil and petrochemical pipelines. Often, these include loading and transfer systems. Even renewable energy systems are vulnerable with hydropower stations exhibiting some of the most catastrophic failures. Any liquid transfer system in which the inertia (mass and velocity) of the fluid is significant is vulnerable to potentially destructive pressure surge.
Our Solutions
Our solutions to these problems involve a variety of approaches. Sometimes problems can be solved by a simple redesign of the pipeline. In some systems we utilise air vessels to cushion surges or substitute flows during transient events. Other technologies in our armoury include surge tanks and feed-tanks, relief valves, pressure sustaining and reducing valves. Often a change in control methodology is sufficient to address pressure surge issues. Occasionally, the control of surges with air valves and vacuum breakers is required. Usually this involves more risk and a particularly detailed analysis.
Peter Glover Consulting Ltd produce pressure surge analyses and fluid control designs that draw on 30 years of expertise. As a result, they uniquely provide a pressure surge analysis service that enables the client to directly participate in the development of optimal solutions.
Pressure Surge TrainingThe pressure surge training, guidance and support requirements of your hydraulic designers, operators and clients can also be provided for. As a result, this should enable them to understand pressure surges, and help them to design control for pressure surge in your pipe systems.
